Hit and run remains under investigation

Jalen Ayers, 19, of Shannon

On Saturday night, Feb. 2, about 10:30 p.m. a pedestrian was killed, the apparent victim of a hit and run.

On Monday, Feb. 4, Lee County Coroner Carolyn Green positively identified the victim as Jalen Ayers, 19, of Shannon.

The incident happened on Highway 45 just south of the Brewer exit. When the Mississippi Highway Patrol arrived they shut down the northbound lanes of 45 between Shannon and Brewer Road for about 3 hours.

Green said, from the condition of the body, that Ayers may have been run over by multiple vehicles.

In fact, officials on the scene said the body was so damaged they couldn’t initially tell the sex or race of the victim. Highway Patrol spokesperson Cpl. Jason Roe said the case remains under investigation and they were looking for the public to help.

“We are looking for any information about the accident, if anyone saw something,” he said. Troopers are expected to release more details as they gather them soon.

On Jan. 19, Ayers had been arrested by the Shannon Police Department for felony attempted breaking and entering. His bond had been set at $1,000 and he was scheduled to appear before the Grand Jury on March 5.

N. L. Jones Funeral Directors will be in charge of the services for Ayers but arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later.

If you have any information related to this case you should call the Mississippi Highway Patrol (662) 534-8619 or crimestoppers 1-877-303-TIPS.
