On Tuesday, Jan. 7, TMZ reported that Swae Lee and Slim Jxmmi's stepfather, Floyd Sullivan, 62, had been shot dead Monday.
Coroner Carolyn Green confirmed the victim’s identity, and the body has been sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Pearl.
According to TMZ, their 19-year-old stepbrother Michael Brown is being held for psychiatric evaluation as a person of interest in the shooting.
Tuesday afternoon, about 5:30 p.m. Michael Jamil Ali Sullivan was released from a local psychological care facility and immediately arrested for murder by the Tupelo Police Department. He was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Lee County Sheriff’s Department.
Floyd Sullivan helped raised Swae and Jxmmi since they were in middle school and was living in their hometown of Tupelo, with their mother, Bernadette. Sullivan and Bernadette also shared a son of their own, Floyd Jr.
Rae Sremmurd's publicist Juel Stanley released the following statement Tuesday “At this time on behalf of Slim Jxmmi and Swae Lee, we’d like to continue to keep the family in our prayers at such a delicate time. Both Slim and Swae Lee are deeply saddened by the death of their step father but are thankful for the love and support from him throughout the years of their upbringing. Though his untimely death has come at such a surprise, we ask that the public just keep the family in great prayer and respect their privacy at this time.”
Tupelo Police Department told TMZ that Sullivan died on the scene from “at least a couple” of gunshot wounds.
The City of Tupelo released the following statement: “Mayor Jason Shelton and his wife are currently vacationing out of the country but wanted to express their sadness and extend their sympathy to Slim Jxmmi, Swae Lee of Rae Sremmurd on the death of their stepfather, Mr. Floyd Sullivan. With close family and friend ties in Tupelo, Rae Sremmurd has continued to call Tupelo home, facilitating many projects to give back to those less fortunate. Mayor Shelton added ‘Mrs. Shelton and I and the City of Tupelo are appreciative of Rae Sremmurd’s continuous community support. Please know that we and the community you love and call home grieve with you, are praying for you, and extend our deepest condolences to you, your entire family, and friends during this difficult time.’”
The Tupelo Police Department has also reportedly said that no one other than Brown was being sought in connection with the killing. Michael Jamil Sullivan remains in the Lee County Jail charged with felony first degree murder.
The investigation is in the preliminary stages. More information will be released when appropriate. Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to contact the Tupelo Police Department at 662-841-6491 or Crime Stoppers of Northeast Mississippi at 1-800-773-TIPS.
