A contractor at Cooper Tire was killed Tuesday afternoon. The accident happened shortly after 1 p.m. and Randy Roberts, 55, of Blue Springs was pronounced dead at 1:48 p.m. at North Mississippi Medical Center. Lee County Coroner Carolyn Green said details of the incident were sketchy as of Wednesday morning but Roberts’ body was sent to Jackson for an autopsy.

According to what she knows, Green said Roberts was welding a pipe that was apparently pressurized. A steel plate exploded off the pipe and hit the victim in the chest causing him to fall from the ladder he was on.

Green said OSHA will be investigating the accident and that more details will be available at a later date.
