On Feb. 7, a Prentiss County man was arrested at his residence, charged with sex crimes. William Earl Smith, 260 CR 6100, Baldwyn, was captured by the Guntown Police Department and booked into the Lee County Jail. Smith, 34, was charged with attempted sexual battery of a child and five counts of molestation. “We got a report in late January, but we think the crimes began in November 2017,” said Guntown Police Chief Michael Hall. “It was just one victim but multiple jurisdictions.” He was brought before Lee County Justice Judge Chuck Hopkins who set his bond at $250,000. Smith is a registered sex offender, who was on probation with the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC). His original charge was 97-5-23, touching of a child or a mentally defective, incapacitated or physically helpless person for lustful purposes, which happened June 18, 2008. Smith will be carried before the next Lee County Grand Jury. There are 13 other registered sex offenders in Baldwyn.
