Since the beginning Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon) has commanded a team of Naval Criminal Investigative Service. The former U.S. Marine Corps Scout Sniper doesn’t care for bureaucracy, lost his wife Shannon and his daughter Kelly; rather secretively carried out revenge with his sharp shooting skills, barks out commands in typical Marine style, but loves all of his crew and will do anything for them.
Harmon said of his character, “I was attracted by [his] flaws. He has lousy taste in women. He's addicted to coffee.”
His current crew is Timothy McGee and Nick Torres and previous staff Caitlin Todd (killed in the line of duty), Anthony DiNozzo (left to look after his newly found daughter), Ziva David (presumed as killed after leaving NCIS; later revealed to have gone into hiding), Alexandra Quinn (left to look after her sick mother), Clayton Reeves (killed defending Abby Sciuto), Ellie Bishop (left presumably for a mission with Odette) and Jacqueline Sloane (left to pursue humanitarian work in Afghanistan).
As characters leave the audience wonders if this will be the end to NCIS, but great story telling always pulls us back in. On April 15, 2021, NCIS was renewed for a nineteenth season which is set to premiere on Sept. 20, 2021.
Season 18 recently released on DVD, and other formats.
While solving cases this season, the background belongs to two great friends, Gibbs and Tobias Fornell (Joe Spano) who’s daughter Emily (Juliette Angelo) is struggling with addiction. She affectionately calls Gibbs “Uncle Gibbs.”
These two buddies decide to go off book and try to locate and bring down the source of the narcotics. Fornell is a Private Detective and former FBI Senior Special Agent.
Also in the background is Dr. James “Jimmy” Palmer (Brian Dietzen), an assistant medical examiner who is trying to come to terms with the death of his wife due to Covid-19, leaving him to face new fatherhood alone. Jimmy serves as a mentor and friend to Kasie Hines (Diona Reasonover), the current NCIS forensics specialist. Kasie is facing trouble after her sister loses her job, and the sister will be moving in with the mother. The two don’t get along so the thought of them under the same roof has her stressing out.
NCIS is the second-longest-running scripted, non-animated U.S. primetime TV series currently airing, surpassed only by Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (1999–present). It never grows old.
